Unique Self Catering Accommodation

This 12th century stronghold, just twenty minutes from the seaside and the home of Sir Humphry Wakefield and his family, became 'base-camp' for the 1298 conquering attack on William Wallace by “Hammer of the Scots”, King Edward 1st.  Wallace had raided the previous year, burning the women and children to death in the local abbey.  The Castle was given permission to add battlements by King Edward III in 1344 (See the actual License in the Castle).  The Elizabethans added 'Long Galleries' and Capability Brown designed the park in 1752.  The glorious Italian garden was laid out in the 19th century by Sir Jeffrey Wyatville, fresh from his royal triumphs at Windsor Castle.  Royal visits from 1200s to this century, and winner of many architectural awards

The Castle is now open to the public and also available for weddings, private functions, tours and has self catering apartments. It is ideally situated for exploring the breathtaking Northumbrian countryside, located 10 miles from the coast and around 70 miles from both Newcastle and Edinburgh

Holiday here at any time of the year, with just one person, a couple or a group in this totally original and unspoiled medieval castle and its historic Coaching Rooms.  It is different, intriguingly beautiful and perfectly comfortable too, with plenty of interest in the region!  Christmas, Halloween or special event parties are all very welcome.

Free access to the stunning castle grounds with a glorious and secluded setting in Northumberland's famously beautiful countryside. Chillingham Castle offers holidaymakers the rare and disappearing experience of staying in a true medieval fortress.

There are some fine apartments to let in the actual castle and in the Castle’s near at hand Coaching Rooms where the coaches and horses were once kept.  The Castle offers the opportunity for both small and large groups to enjoy a most memorable holiday.  The coast nearby has spectacular beaches; Northumberland is a place of great natural beauty

The castle is surrounded by lawns and formal gardens, including a topiary garden, with interesting clipped hedges. The woodland can be carpeted with flowers in the spring and early summer, making the walk to the lake an extraordinary experience.  The extensive grounds are accessible to holiday makers.

Fishing is also available on the River Till; a Fishing Permit is available from the Castle for £10 per day. Within a few miles of the coast and being in close proximity to several golf courses, Chillingham is ideally situated for a unique holiday, with fishing, golf and stately home visits

Our opening for day visitors is 1st April until 31st October, 12 noon until 5pm.CLOSED SATURDAYS.
